Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep: Maybe you have to know the darkness before you can appreciate the light
I was highly looking forward to playing this game and I was unfortunately not able to play this game for along time since I did not have a psp. I feel as though my days of owning handhelds have come to an end :'( but that did not stop me from getting this game on Kh 2.5!
To those who may be reading there are no spoilers in this review. But to those who have played the game don’t worry I will write another post on this game because I have some things to say about the kingdom hearts characters as a whole. Without further delay let’s get to it!
To say I am familiar and comfortable with the concept square enix uses in their battle system of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 it was rather easy for me to catch on the battle system on Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep (KH BBS). Overall I am please with the evolution of the battle system, monsters and innovation that has been put into the KH franchise.
In my opinion Square Enix had a lot of ideas they wanted to use but they had to test it out on us fans first with the different stories and platforms (game boy advance, Nintendo DS etc). Once they found something that works they will more than likely incorporate it into KH 3.
But the thing that made KH BBS one of the most talked about games of the franchise was because KH decide to end the thought that keyblade wielders were rare. Thanks to the secret ending of KH 2 and Kh 2 Final Mix. As a matter of fact many fans (including myself) made the mistake of thinking KH BBS was KH 3.
What you need to know KH BBS is a prequel to Kingdom Hearts. This takes place while Sora and Riku are just little boys. But the story itself has both little and A LOT to do with Sora and Riku. And Kairi for that matter too…and a few others.
But the story takes place and two young keyblade wielders trying to earn the rank of Keyblade Master. And there’s another young person who has been shadowing these two in full support of their dreams of becoming masters. But like most stories there’s a plot twist…and let’s just say there are a number of plot twists in this game.
But the thing that stands out to me is that KH BBS sort of sounds like a disney spin off of star wars. One of the Keyblade Masters gives advice to two of his pupils and this advice almost sounds like a jedi code. People who have played KH BBS already who may be reading this might agree with me as well.
I don’t think this is much of a spoiler but I will give out the names of the three young keyblade wielders. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THEIR NAMES PLEASE SKIP THIS PARAGRAPH. Terra, Aqua and Ven are the young keyblade wielders who hope to one day become masters. These are the same three people you saw in the secret ending of KH 2 and KH 2 Final Mix.
This game has excellent replay value for you get to play through as each character. And of course you are welcome to play the game on harder difficulties which is what I’m currently doing. I started on normal and I did struggle at the end of the game for their were certain abilities I did not possess which would have made my life so much easier.
But I have a sense of pride in my gaming. I try my best not to use any help from online when playing through a game for the first time. Only when I play through it the second or third time do I look up strategies and cheats. To be honest I didn’t enjoy my experience on the first overall play through since it was different from Kh 2.
But as I continued to play through other characters’ story lines I got the hang of it and then the game got that much more fun ^_^. Actually once you know what you’re doing the game is really easy. I just completed proud mode. I will attempt Critical Mode next.
Overall I’m pleased with the game and I suggest this to anyone. Though if you are new to Kingdom Hearts. I suggest you start with Kingdom hearts then work your way up from there. For instance start with Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, then Kingdom Hearts 2 or Kingdom Hearts 2 final mix. Either one will do.
That’s all I can say for now without spoiling the game. I do apologize if those who have already played the game did not get much out of this review but don’t worry. I will write another review for those who already completed the game 😉
